Biking: Ever since the age of 4 when my Mom put me on the back of her bike for a ride from the Highlands to visit my Grandparents in West Newton, I’ve enjoyed biking. My paper route as a teen was usually accomplished on my old Schwinn (with snazzy dual rear baskets, no less!).
It continues to be in our best interest to make Newton as bike-friendly a city as possible.
I support Bike Newton’s Bike Accommodation Plan, and, more broadly, the increase of bike lanes and paths where safe and appropriate. I also support retaining and potentially expanding bike racks at all municipal and educational buildings throughout the city, as well as private business locations where feasible.
Walking: We must also do everything possible to keep our sidewalks maintained and useable year-round. It’s more than great exercise for the entire family – it’s also a safety imperative for all pedestrians and those who have mobility challenges. Crossing guards are a must to retain, and added pedestrian signals should be considered where feasible.
Driving: To help improve traffic flow for fuel conservation, reduced congestion, and increased convenience, I support the re-timing of traffic lights (using state funds), and re-painting road markings for greater visibility and safety. We only have one set of roads, and the need to co-exist with care, mutual respect, and safety is greater than ever. More educational programs for younger drivers can help in that effort.
Your support for Alderman Shapiro’s re-election means you’re supporting Biking, Walking, and safer shared roads city-wide.
